The conservative country of Sharjah of the United Arab Emirates has passed a new rule related to the sale of lingerie. The new law prohibits men from selling lingerie in shops. All the lingerie outlets have been instructed to employ only women salespersons for the job.
Ali Bin Salem Al Mahmoud, Director General of the Sharjah Economic Development Department, was quoted as saying,
We have issued instructions to all shops and shopping centers to hire only female employees to sell women’s garments, and it must be abided by.
During the campaign in the Muslim dominated country, which was held, earlier this month, 40 shops were found breaching the new lingerie law and 10 outlets were forced to shut down.
There are similar rules for Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, however, shopkeepers complain that it is difficult to find women salesmen for the job in such a conservative atmosphere.
